AEW’s Mariah May recently captured the AEW Women’s World Championship by defeating “Timeless” Toni Storm at AEW All In. Following her victory, May appeared on Barstool’s “Rasslin'” podcast to talk about her path into professional wrestling.
“I always wanted to be a wrestler, but after leaving school, I worked in accountancy,” May shared. “Despite my strong desire to wrestle, the UK scene is smaller, making it challenging to find training and opportunities.”
Eventually, May found a reliable training facility and set her sights on moving to America to appear on mainstream television. As she delved deeper into the wrestling world, May became fascinated by Japanese wrestling, which led her to focus on STARDOM.
May was drawn to STARDOM and aspired to become a champion there, despite the challenges. After spending four years on the English independent scene, she made her STARDOM debut in early 2023 and won the Goddesses Of Stardom tag team championship with Mina Shirakawa. However, her time with STARDOM was brief.

While her interest in Japanese wrestling grew, May remained focused on her goal of moving to the U.S. In early 2023, she was offered a deal with AEW, with a detailed storyline planned for her. Still, she felt unprepared to transition away from STARDOM immediately.
“There were personal goals and improvements I wanted to achieve,” May explained. “STARDOM provided intense training through its dojo, which I wanted to complete.”
After spending additional time in STARDOM, May made her AEW debut in late 2023 and had her first match on January 3, 2024. When asked about her rapid success, May expressed confidence in her achievements.
“I always knew from the beginning,” May said. “Starting out, I had some advantages, including being one of the few women in training and standing out in appearance, which is not as common among independent wrestlers.”
May clarified that her comments were about the independent scene, noting that many women on television are athletes and models.
