AEW’s Mercedes Mone Reflects on Wrestle Dynasty Victory Over Mina Shirakawa

Mercedes Mone’s undefeated streak since joining AEW in 2024 remains unbroken, as she triumphed over Mina Shirakawa at the Wrestle Dynasty event on January 5 at the Tokyo Dome. In a hard-fought battle, “The CEO” not only extended her reign as AEW TBS Champion but also captured the RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Championship, adding to her collection alongside the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship. However, Mone’s 16th consecutive victory was far from easy, with Shirakawa proving to be a formidable opponent.

In her latest Mone Mag appearance, the AEW star took a moment to praise Shirakawa for her incredible performance and determination. “She gave everything she had to try and win,” Mone said, acknowledging the fierce challenge Shirakawa presented. But beyond their in-ring rivalry, Mone also shared a personal story about the bond she shares with Mina, revealing another reason why she holds Shirakawa in such high regard.

“I remember meeting her a few years back when she was in her early 30s,” Mone recalled. “At that time, she was new to our craft and shared her great passion for wrestling with me and wanting to wrestle in the U.S., but she had concerns about her age. She honestly seemed to feel like it was too late for her.” Mone went on to encourage Shirakawa, reassuring her that her age was no barrier. “I do remember assuring her nothing could be further from the truth. Side note and lesson for all of you, your friends, and your children: it’s never too late for any of us, as Mina proved.”

Mone continued to express her admiration for Shirakawa, stating, “And you heard it here from the CEO: you have not seen the last of this girl. She is another superstar on the rise, and I couldn’t be prouder to know her and to have competed against her.”

After their match, Mone attempted to offer Shirakawa a handshake in a show of sportsmanship, but the challenger refused, clearly frustrated with the loss. Despite the refusal, it’s clear that Mone has great respect for Shirakawa and expects to see her rise even further in the future. With Mone continuing her reign as a champion across three different companies, 2025 looks to be another thrilling year for AEW’s star.
