Backstage News on Internal WWE Reaction to Netflix Vince McMahon Documentary Series

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the documentary miniseries “Mr. McMahon,” which explores the life of former WWE CEO Vince McMahon. Set for release on September 25, the series has been described by some in the wrestling world as a comprehensive critique of McMahon. This reaction comes amid ongoing legal issues, including a lawsuit filed by Janel Grant earlier this year. Fightful Select has gathered insights into the internal WWE reaction to the trailer.

According to Fightful, a long-time WWE talent mentioned that McMahon’s life outside his current legal issues should not be a major focus. Over a dozen WWE contacts expressed a desire to “wash their hands” of McMahon and move forward. The trailer features various commentators describing McMahon as “a character,” with McMahon himself asserting that his true self is not fully known, despite his portrayal as a “bad guy.” WWE sources indicated that this line was intended to generate buzz for the series.

Wrestlenomics and POST Wrestling have reported that a disclaimer at the start of the series’ first episode clarifies that most interviews were conducted before the Grant lawsuit was filed. WWE sources suggested this was to mitigate any negative fallout for major figures who might have spoken positively about McMahon.

Janel Grant is reportedly not featured in the documentary, although she may be mentioned in the final episode, which addresses the allegations against McMahon. Fightful confirmed that while the documentary initially sought an interview with Grant, it did not materialize. “Netflix’s documentary group made initial outreach to Janel’s representation for an interview for this project. Despite this, no such interview came to fruition,” read a statement from Grant’s spokesperson. Fightful could not obtain further details on this matter.

The documentary has reportedly been in development for several years, with some segments filmed before the COVID-19 pandemic, during which WWE was expected to have production credits. WWE declined to provide an official comment on the “Mr. McMahon” trailer when contacted by Fightful.
