Bully Ray Says AEW All Out Plastic Bag Spot Reminded Him of Two Wrestling Legends

At AEW All Out in Chicago, a notable moment saw Jon Moxley use a plastic bag to choke Bryan Danielson, reviving a controversial move from 35 years ago. On “Busted Open Radio,” Bully Ray reflected on this spot, drawing parallels to Terry Funk and Ric Flair.

“Immediately, Terry Funk and Ric Flair came to mind,” Bully Ray said. “It’s hard not to think of them because they were the first to use such a spot, and it carried a very violent implication.”

The original incident occurred at Clash of the Champions VIII on September 12, 1989, during a tag team match where Funk used a plastic bag to suffocate Flair, leading to significant backlash and a brief firing of Funk. TBS even considered removing WCW from its broadcast lineup.

Bully Ray also contrasted AEW’s approach to violence with WWE’s standards, noting Vince McMahon’s ban on using household items as weapons. “Vince did not want weapons that could be found in a household because he didn’t want children replicating those actions,” Ray recalled, expressing concern over the potential impact on young viewers.
