Creators of Mr. McMahon Reflect on Crafting the “Strangest Documentary” They’ve Ever Made

In a move reminiscent of Oprah, Vince McMahon attempted to acquire the documentary made about him in hopes of burying it. However, that plan fell through, and now the six-part series Mr. McMahon is available on Netflix, showcasing his story in all its complexity. On The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons, an executive producer of the series, described the project as a unique experience unlike any he had previously undertaken.

“It was certainly the strangest documentary process I’ve ever been involved with,” Simmons noted. “We aimed to create as balanced a portrait as possible of someone who has had an outsized impact on not just professional wrestling, but also on culture, television, cable, the pay-per-view model, and the streaming model. There’s truly no one like him in the world of promotion. The main challenge was capturing that impact, and then figuring out who this man really is—what’s genuine and what’s performance.”

David Shoemaker, who appears as an interviewee in the series, speculated that McMahon has been so deeply embedded in his on-screen persona that he might not fully understand his own identity—an idea McMahon himself hints at in the documentary.

“I’m not sure that [Vince] knew what story he wanted to tell. I don’t know if he even knows who he is well enough to tell that story,” Shoemaker explained. “He’s such a bizarre subject for a project like this. His timeline is so intertwined with WWE that there’s very little personal life for us to delve into.”

Predictably, McMahon has expressed his objections to the documentary’s perspective, labeling it a “deceptive narrative” in a statement released before its debut. In response, Janel Grant’s attorney issued a statement addressing McMahon’s criticisms.
