Ethan Page on Patience Required When Working with NXT Talent: “It Takes an Ocean’s Worth”

Ethan Page, a veteran of nearly two decades on the independent wrestling scene and promotions like AEW, made his WWE debut earlier this year. Quickly establishing himself as a key player on WWE NXT, Page has found himself working closely with many of the brand’s younger, less experienced performers. In a recent interview on Sports Illustrated’s The Takedown, Page shared insights into what it’s like to collaborate with these rising stars.

One memorable moment he recalled was a visit to a children’s hospital alongside fellow NXT talent. During a recorded sit-down, the group was asked to share the moment they fell in love with wrestling. While Page had a clear childhood memory, the younger NXT stars all shared that their love for the sport developed after being hired by WWE.

Page acknowledged that this difference in experience is not necessarily a bad thing. “Is that a bad thing? No, not at all,” he explained. “I respect the hell out of these athletes. They’re freaks. I can’t do anything they can do. But it’s a lot different than the 18 years it took me to get to where I am now.”

Reflecting on the contrast between his long journey and the rapid rise of many WWE recruits, Page emphasized the immense patience required to work with these younger talents. He noted that the “ocean’s amount” of patience required comes from understanding the unique experiences of the new generation, who often come from athletic backgrounds rather than years of independent wrestling.

Page also pointed out that while these younger WWE stars may not have had the same long road to success, they certainly deserve a shot. He explained that for WWE to take notice of someone, especially from outside the wrestling industry, they must have already excelled in their chosen field, which is something he respects.

The interview highlights Page’s mature perspective on the evolving landscape of WWE, and how the wrestling industry is increasingly attracting athletes from a wide range of backgrounds. Despite the differences, Page is committed to helping these new stars find their footing in the business.
