WWE Hall of Famer Bobby Heenan is often celebrated for his work as a manager, commentator, and wrestling personality, but many tend to overlook his in-ring career, which began in the 1960s. Before rising to fame in WWE, Heenan wrestled for notable promotions such as the NWA, AWA, Maple Leaf Wrestling in Canada, and even took part in tours with All Japan Pro Wrestling. Despite the overshadowing of his in-ring abilities by his later managerial and commentary roles, Hulk Hogan believes Heenan was one of the best wrestlers to ever step into the ring.
Speaking on “Barstool Rasslin’,” Hogan made a bold statement about Heenan’s wrestling skills: “He was better than Bret Hart, Macho Man, and Ricky Steamboat combined. He was better in the ring than anybody I’ve ever seen … he was amazing.”
Hogan had extensive experience working with Heenan throughout his career. While most of their interactions came after Heenan had shifted his focus to managing, they did share the ring on multiple occasions. In WWE, Hogan wrestled against Heenan, and they also faced off several times during their time in Verne Gagne’s AWA in the early ’80s. Though they never squared off in a one-on-one match, they were involved in numerous tag team and handicap matches. Heenan even scored victories on occasion, often teaming up with legendary figures like Nick Bockwinkel, Ken Patera, and Bobby Duncum.
