Wrestling is often subjective, but few can claim as many accolades for match quality as Kenny Omega. To mark the 7th anniversary of a memorable match in his career, Omega took to X to reflect on a standout performance. In 2017, at NJPW Destruction, Omega faced fellow AEW star Juice Robinson in a battle for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. “Juice took me to the absolute limit,” Omega posted. “Juice isn’t a joke, and he’d go on to prove himself as a worthy US champ after this.”
Omega shared a personal story about the match, though character limits prevented him from detailing it fully. His post featured a clip showing his use of the “Super OWA,” a punishing brain-buster from the apron to the floor. “This was the first time I had no choice but to use the Super OWA to finish the job,” Omega added. Ultimately, he retained his championship after the grueling contest.
Juice Robinson, who began his career in WWE’s developmental system, found success in Japan in the mid-2010s, including his famous bout with Omega. After leaving NJPW in April 2022, Robinson debuted in AEW on September 28’s “AEW Dynamite,” where he lost to then-AEW World Champion Jon Moxley. By late 2023, he aligned with Bullet Club Gold. Meanwhile, Omega has been sidelined throughout 2024, following surgery for severe diverticulitis, the same condition that forced Brock Lesnar to retire from UFC in 2011.
