Ricky Starks Opens Up About His AEW Absence in 2024
Former AEW World Tag Team Champion Ricky Starks has been making headlines in 2024, but not for reasons fans might expect. Absent from AEW since March, Starks’ unexplained hiatus has sparked countless rumors about his status and future. Recently, during an appearance on Insight, he addressed the ongoing speculation and shared how challenging it has been to step away from wrestling.
“I’ve just been home,” Starks admitted. “It’s kind of a mindf*** because I’m in my prime. It sucks to have so much momentum, riding the wave, putting in the work, and then suddenly just be at home for so long. You’re like, ‘whoa.’ It throws you off. I’m not meant to be at home in this phase of my life. I’m not meant to be a homebody, chilling and not doing the thing I’ve worked my ass off to do for the past 13 years.”
Staying Active Outside of AEW
Although Starks has been absent from AEW for most of the year, he has remained active in the independent wrestling scene. His most recent appearance was at GCW’s Dream On event, leading to a highly anticipated match against Matt Cardona at Highest in the Room 3 on December 14. Additionally, Starks has wrestled for promotions such as Glory Pro Wrestling and Big Time Wrestling, disproving rumors that he was sidelined due to medical issues.
Why Has Ricky Starks Been Away from AEW?
Despite the speculation surrounding his absence, Starks himself remains uncertain about the reason.
“Beats me,” he said. “I could have 1,000 theories about what’s really going on, but if I don’t have a definitive answer, I can’t make one up. Would I love to know the exact reason? Absolutely. Do I have speculations? Sure. But speculating does nothing to help the situation. It sucks, honestly. It’s been a cold day here in Austin—actually, a cold nine months. But thankfully, I have a sweater and can keep the warmth going.”
Starks’ Contract and Future with AEW
Starks was reportedly backstage at AEW’s Full Gear pay-per-view on November 23, where his presence was welcomed by those behind the scenes. However, his absence from AEW television may continue for now.
According to Fightful Select, Starks’ AEW contract, initially set to expire in spring 2024, was extended by one year after AEW exercised an option to retain him. This means Starks remains under contract until spring 2025, though he has not been featured on AEW programming since the extension.
What’s Next for Ricky Starks?
As Starks continues to impress on the independent circuit, fans are left wondering when—or if—he will return to AEW television. For now, his upcoming match with Matt Cardona and other appearances promise to keep his momentum alive as he navigates this uncertain phase of his career.
