Three wrestlers reach podium at CKLV Invitational – Binghamton University Athletics,
LAS VEGAS, NV. – The Binghamton wrestling team finished action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday afternoon, putting three competitors on the podium. Anthony Sobotker and No. 11 Lou DePrez finished in seventh place, and Joe Doyle took eighth.
“There’s a ton of nationally ranked opponents out here,” head coach Kyle Borshoff said. “I’m happy to get three guys on the podium out here. It’s the first time we are leaving with three place winners. This event has given us a lot of things that we need to work on moving forward.”
Sobotker and DePrez each went 2-1 on the day, winning in the blood round before falling in their next match, capping the day off with wins in the seventh-place match. Doyle won his blood round match, and medical forfeited his next two bouts to take eighth.
At 133-pounds, Sobotker kicked off the day against Columbia’s Mason Clarke. With the bout tied at two, the senior earned a takedown and quickly turned his opponent. A few seconds later, he walked away with his seventh pin of the year and a spot on the podium.
In his next match, he fell behind Jake Gliva 3-1 after two periods. Sobotker did get a key reversal to start, but relinquished an escape which turned out to be the difference.
His seventh-place match started similarly to his previous match, as he fell behind early. Down 4-3 in the third, he scored a key takedown and ride out for the win. His opponent was ranked No. 24 in the country.
DePrez dominated EIWA foe Jacob Koser to kick off his day, earning a major decision in the final minute. He started strong against No. 6 seeded Thomas Penola with two takedowns, but gave up one in the second and third. He eventually fell by decision.
Doyle had a strong comeback in his matchup to reach the podium. He fell behind 4-2 after one, but had a big reversal to tie it up after two. Another takedown in the third carried him to victory.
