As we reported here on eWrestlingNews earlier today, AEW today announced the signing of Thunder Rosa to a full-time deal. However, in the time since this signing announcement, more information has emerged on how AEW were able to complete the deal.
According to a new report from Fightful Select, Rosa’s original contract with the NWA was set to last through the year. As a result of this, AEW contacted the NWA and orchestrated a buyout of Rosa’s contract. AEW President Tony Khan is also reportedly very careful when it comes to avoiding contract tampering, and so he “wanted to play by the book on the situation.” The report also stated that Rosa had asked to be released from her NWA contract last year.
Rosa had wrestled in the NWA just six times this year, before AEW bought her out of her contract. She was also a one-time NWA World Women’s Champion, holding the belt for 277 days in 2020.
