WWE has been increasingly focused on developing its talent, with legends like The Undertaker, John Cena, and CM Punk frequently visiting the developmental brand, WWE NXT, to mentor young stars. Recently, current NXT North American Champion Tony D’Angelo shared insights from his conversations with Cena and Punk during an interview with MuscleManMalcolm.
D’Angelo recalled Cena’s visit, where the wrestling icon offered valuable advice to the entire roster. “Cena came in and talked to the whole roster and gave us some good advice,” he stated. He also highlighted Punk’s ongoing presence, noting that Punk is often available to watch film and provide feedback. Punk specifically advised him to steer clear of social media negativity, saying, “You don’t let social media — just don’t look at it, ’cause when you’re in the spotlight, you got a lot of people saying a lot of crap in the comments and even DMing you.”
This perspective resonates with many in the wrestling industry, where the toxic nature of social media can lead to unnecessary criticism. D’Angelo acknowledged that while he doesn’t experience the same level of online scrutiny as Punk, he understands the arbitrary nature of online hate. “I’m sure at some point in my career I’ll get annoyed, but I think that’s the biggest thing, and a lot of people should take that advice,” he remarked. He emphasized that opinions from anonymous users shouldn’t outweigh the perspective of those who matter, especially in relation to one’s career.
