Former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon recently attempted to purchase the rights to Netflix’s upcoming “Mr. McMahon” docuseries, slated to premiere this Wednesday on the streaming platform, likely in a bid to prevent its airing. As the documentary promises a potentially critical examination of the ex-wrestling mogul, McMahon has taken steps to safeguard his interests.
According to a report from POST Wrestling, McMahon has ended his association with the PR firm Sitrick and Company. McMahon enlisted the firm five months ago during a lawsuit brought against him, John Laurinaitis, and WWE by former legal assistant Janel Grant. Grant has accused McMahon, Laurinaitis, and WWE of sexual abuse, harassment, torture, and trafficking during her tenure under McMahon. Federal authorities have begun investigating Grant’s allegations, leading to a six-month pause in the civil suit. McMahon will continue to be represented by Jessica Taub Rosenberg in this legal matter.
Initially, Netflix and WWE collaborated on the “Mr. McMahon” series, featuring extensive interviews with McMahon himself. However, following McMahon’s departure from WWE in 2022 due to revelations about hush money payments to former employees, Netflix proceeded with the documentary independently. McMahon recently distanced himself from the series in a statement, asserting that it conflates his real persona with the character portrayed on television.
This situation adds an intriguing dimension for Netflix, which will become WWE’s exclusive broadcaster from 2025 under a $5 billion deal.
