WWE HOFer Eric Bischoff Discusses The Legend Who Gave Him ‘Imposter Syndrome’

WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff recently revealed that he experienced a case of imposter syndrome when attempting to bring wrestling legend Nick Bockwinkel into WCW. Bischoff shared his admiration for the late Bockwinkel, praising his work both on the mic and in the ring.

During a special bonus episode of his 83 Weeks podcast, Bischoff reflected on the impact Bockwinkel had on him as a fan growing up. “Nick Bockwinkel, I brought him in because I was a fan of his back when I was 16, 17, 18 years old watching AWA. I always loved Nick Bockwinkel’s work. He was incredible on the mic and amazing in the ring,” Bischoff stated. He emphasized how smooth and believable Bockwinkel was, saying, “He was so articulate, and he knew his character so well. It was hard not to hate him and admire him at the same time.”

When the opportunity arose to reach out to Bockwinkel and offer him a role as WCW’s on-screen commissioner, Bischoff admitted that he felt somewhat overwhelmed. Despite the offer being a significant one, Bischoff couldn’t shake the feeling that he didn’t fully belong in that conversation due to the respect he had for Bockwinkel’s greatness.

“It was easy in a way because I was offering an opportunity and money, so that takes the pressure off. But subconsciously, I looked at Nick differently because I was such a huge fan,” Bischoff explained. “I wouldn’t say I was in awe, but I had so much respect for him that I felt awkward. Even though I was offering him a significant amount of money and opportunity, I had a case of imposter syndrome, I think, that’s the best way to describe it.”

Bischoff went on to suggest that fans revisit Bockwinkel’s matches, especially those against Curt Hennig, which he credits with making him a lifelong admirer of Bockwinkel’s in-ring talent.

This candid reflection from Bischoff provides insight into the admiration that wrestling executives often have for the legends they grew up watching. Even someone in a position of power, like Bischoff, can feel humbled when dealing with an icon of Bockwinkel’s stature.
