Mariah May successfully defended her AEW Women’s World Championship at the Grand Slam edition of AEW Dynamite, defeating Yuka Sakazaki. However, her championship celebration was cut short when former TBS Champion Willow Nightingale intervened to prevent May from attacking Sakazaki further. Adding to the drama, May’s close friend Mina Shirakawa made her return to AEW, appearing puzzled as to why May would even consider attacking Sakazaki.
After the match, AEW cameras caught up with May and Shirakawa, where the champion had some words for Nightingale.
“Wow, Willow, you really know how to ruin a moment, don’t you?” May stated. “I successfully defeated the bully Yuka and defended my AEW Women’s World Championship… this is what it looks like in case you’ve never seen it before. And then this precious H-Cup angel flew all the way from Japan just to see me and celebrate with me.” When Shirakawa inquired about the situation, May referred to Nightingale as a “pain in the rear-end.” She added, “Willow, you ruined my celebration. It’s not my fault you have nothing to celebrate.”
May also expressed her disappointment to Shirakawa about her quick return to Japan before having an official championship celebration. Shirakawa reassured her that everything was fine and she had nothing to worry about. In reality, Shirakawa is heading back to Japan to team up with May’s former friend and mentor, “Timeless” Toni Storm, at an upcoming STARDOM event in Korakuen Hall on September 28. This match will mark Storm’s first appearance since losing the Women’s World Championship to May at All In on August 25, and her first match for STARDOM in over five years.
