The Monday Night Wars marked a significant chapter in wrestling history, pitting Vince McMahon’s WWE against Eric Bischoff’s WCW in a fierce battle for ratings. This iconic rivalry was highlighted in the recent six-part Netflix series “Mr. McMahon,” which chronicles the rise and fall of the former WWE Chairman amid various scandals. On a recent episode of his “83 Weeks” podcast, Bischoff reflected on the fourth installment of the series, which focused on the wrestling wars.
Bischoff shared that during their ratings rivalry, he never spoke directly with McMahon in person, but he made a concerted effort to get under his skin. At one point, he even rented a billboard right across the street from McMahon’s office at Titan Towers.
“I thought, ‘That’ll be fun,'” he recalled. “This was during a time when I was trying to get into his head and make him feel off balance, hoping it would lead him to make some poor decisions.” Bischoff elaborated that he instructed his marketing team to create a large poster promoting their upcoming pay-per-view event, ensuring it would be a daily reminder for McMahon as he arrived at and left work.
To add to the trolling, Bischoff called McMahon to ask how the sign looked, pretending he hadn’t seen it yet. He chuckled as he recounted that McMahon never returned the call.
